Safe Use, Maintenance & Mounting of Abrasive Wheels


Aim: To Enable candidates to Select and Mount Abrasive Wheels safely in accordance with the Safety in Industry (Abrasive Wheels) Regulations 1982 & 2005

The provision and use of Work Equipment requires that any person using a piece of work equipment that presents a significant risk to the user must be trained and that the training covers not only the use but also any hazards arising from the use and the precautions to be observed. It is not adequate to assume that because a person has a qualification in a trade, that they are competent with any tools related to that trade. This is especially true of power tools.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

  • To identify the hazards arising from the use of abrasive wheels
  • Identify the methods of marking abrasive wheels as to type and speed
  • List the methods of storage, handling and transportation of abrasive wheels

  • Show the methods for testing and inspecting wheels for damage
  • Demonstrate the correct method of mounting an abrasive wheel including knowledge of the function of the components
  • Show the method of dressing an abrasive wheel
  • To adjust the rest correctly
  • The requirements of the regulations

  • Risks associated with Power Tools
  • Practical training session, from which all delegates will be assessed

  • This course is available as an on-site customised course
  • Each participant will be issued with certification valid for 3 years

COURSE DELIVERY

  • The Abrasive Wheel course will be delivered by means of classroom theory sessions and practical exercises
  • At the end of the course each candidate will undertake a practical and theory assessment to ensure they have achieved the proper standard in safe use, maintenance & Mounting of Abrassive Wheels
  • The course will be supported by means of powerpoint presentation, training video and course handouts

  • Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act, 2005
  • Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Construction) Regulations 2006
  • Manufacturers Handbooks

PARTICIPANT PROFILE

For supervisors or operatives who are involved with the use and mounting of abrasive wheels and wish to comply with the Safety in Industry (Abrasive Wheels) Regulations, 1982 and Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005.
