City & Guilds 2078 Overview (Refrigerant Handling)

City & Guilds 2078 (C&G 2078) has been developed to reflect the standards of The Ozone Depleting Substances (Qualifications) Regulations 2006 and will be deemed appropriate for the award of “Interim Certification” under the F-Gas Regulations.

Table of Minimum Qualifications

Tasks Equipment Minimum Qualifications
Servicing & Maintenance of Equipment Refrigeration, Air Conditioning & heat pump equipment which is stationary at all times when in operation City and Guilds Certificate in Handling Refrigerants Scheme 2078:
Commercial and domestic refrigerators and freezers
which are stationary at all times when in operation
Portable refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump equipment.
Dismantling of equipment Refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump equipment: City and Guilds Certificate in Handling Refrigerants Scheme 2078;
(a) which is stationary at all times when in operation; and
(b)which can only be dismantled at the place at which the equipment is used.

  • Candidates for assessment for City & Guilds 2078 must demonstrate that they are competent to handle refrigerants, including both charging and recovery. They must also show their awareness of the hazards of using such Refrigerants to themselves, to other people and to the environment.
  • City and Guilds 2078 Certificate in Handling Refrigerants is aimed at anyone involved in the use, handling and disposal of refrigerants and refrigeration, process cooling or air conditioning.
  • The assessment is a mixture of both theory and practical elements culminating in an assessment. The candidate must complete both elements to achieve certification.

The topics that are assessed include the following:

1. Select, check and use appropriate safety and personal protective equipment.
2. Identify type of refrigerant and its state (eg liquid, vapour or saturated liquid/vapour)
3. Identify condition of refrigerant (eg sub cooled, saturated or superheated)
4. Connect gauges, lines and charging apparatus with minimum contamination and loss to atmosphere and hazards to health and property (e.g. toxicity, flammability and combustibility)
5. Charge low pressure side of the system with zeotropic blend in the liquid phase to correct charge level
6. Remove gauges with minimum loss to atmosphere and hazards to health and property (eg toxicity, flammability and combustibility)
7. Check and test for leaks and appropriate action taken if leakage is discovered
8. Refit caps.
9. Select and check appropriate recovery cylinder, to ensure its integrity and fitness for use prior to connection.
10. Recover refrigerant from the system, until gauges read zero (atmospheric pressure)
11. Disconnect gauges, lines, recovery equipment and cylinder, with minimum loss to atmosphere and hazards to health and property (eg toxicity, flammability and combustibility)
12. Prepare cylinder for transportation in compliance with regulations

Course notes will be supplied to each candidate as soon as they register. These notes have been designed specifically for the course for the purpose of distance learning. A presentation will be provided by the assessor prior to the assessments. All course material will be covered and emphasis will be placed on the core assessment topics. This will be followed by a practical demonstration and a Q&A session

Each candidate is required to complete an individual assessment. This will take about 1.5 hours. Candidates who successfully complete the assessments receive certificates for City & Guilds 2078 Parts 01 & 02.

Pre C&G 2078 Training - Friday 5th March 2010

As many candidates feel that they require preliminary training for C&G 2078 we have made available a course aimed specifically at C&G 2078. This is a one day course and it should be noted that this is not a basic refrigeration course. All participants should have a good knowledge of refrigeration plant and principles before attending this training.
