Programmable logic Controllers (Fetac Level 6)
The ESS Ltd. Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) course is a 5 day course which allows learners to achieve a Fetac Level 6 Certification in Programmable Logic Controllers (C30115).The course is broken down into 3 Units:
Unit 1: PLC Operation
Learners will be able to:1) Identify the main components in a PLC controlled system,
- input board
- output board
- CPU
- Power pack
- Program input system
3) List the main hardware and software methods of entering and storing PLC programs
4) Intrerpret an allocation list and use to locate components on the system
5) Use an allocation list to determine the condition of the inputs and outputs of the PLC
6) List the major types of PLC fault
Unit 2: Field Devices
Learners will be able to:1) Complete the following tasks:
- push buttons
- levers
- trip rollers
- reed switches
- inductive sensors
- capacitive sensors
- photo-cells
- relays and contractors
3) Outline the operation of these standard field devices
4) Test the operation of these input devices
Unit 3: Programming
Learners will be able to:1) List and explain common logic and switching functions of a PLC
-
- AND
- OR
- NOT
- TIMER
- COUNTER
- INTERNAL RELAY (FLAG)
3) Interpret Ladder and STL programs
4) List common editing functions of a PLC
- overwrite
- delete
- insert
- search
6) Construct a variety of programs (at least 4) as specified in a (supplied) hardwired circuit
diagram. Combinational circuits should have examples of interlocks and overrides
7) Locate a fault in a PLC system
8) Replace a field device or report a PLC fault

Course Delivery:
The course will be delivered over a 5 day period with the instructor. The course will consist of :- Blended Learning
- Laboratory experiments
Fetac Certification
This course is certified by FETAC (Further Education and Training Awards Council). FETAC gives people the opportunity to gain recognition for learning in education or training centres, in the work place and in the community. The FETAC Assessment periods are January, May, August and November. FETAC issue certificates within approx. 3-4 months of each assessment period. Candidates will be issued with a letter showing successful completion of the course while waiting for FETAC Award.Fetac Assessment
This course will be run as a FETAC Certified course at Level 6. Delegates who wish to achieve a FETAC component certificate will be assessed on;- Structured written questions (Exam at end of course)
