We have just finished working with Peter De Jager on Change Management and Problem Solving Always good fun Peter, always good fun!! Good learnings always from Peter too and here’s some that we like lots. “Change is a process………. not an event. And here’s one that doesn’t seem to ring true at all – especially when talking about Change Management!
“It is not necessary to change. Survival is not mandatory” W. Edwards Deming
Peter says “Deming is correct. To change is a choice. We can choose to do nothing in the face of an oncoming storm, but there’s a consequence – to not change, when we must change – has a finality attached to it. He’s also correct in that there is always an oncoming storm of one sort or another. Change is ultimately necessary for our survival.
“If you’re in a bad situation, don’t worry it’ll change. If you’re in a good situation, don’t worry it’ll change.” John A. Simone, Sr.
“Nothing stays the same”. Yes, a quote to respond to a quote, but it’s necessary. When things are ‘good‘ we get complacent and begin to feel a sense of entitlement to what we have. That it must not change because it’s good. And when it does change, we feel betrayed.
And when things are bad? We latch onto the ludicrous idea that it’ll never get better. We forget the simple reminder “Nothing stays the same”
“If you want to truly understand something, try to change it” Kurt Lewin
