Participant Profile and Programme Objective

The Introduction to Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) course has been specifically created to introduce individuals who have previously completed an electrical course, to the basics of PLC control systems.

The course will complement and build on the trainee’s existing skillset, by exploring PLCs, a vital element widely used in Industrial, Commercial, Recreational and Manufacturing settings.

This 2-day course is recommended for people who would like to enter maintenance and facilities management roles, equipping you with an entry-level knowledge and awareness of PLC controlled systems, in order to carry out basic electrical fault finding and repair.

Fast Facts

  • This is an interactive course carried out over 2 days.
  • No previous PLC experience or training is required, but learners should have a knowledge of electrical systems e.g. Industrial Electrical Systems.
  • The course will deliver an understanding of how a PLC system works, helping trainees diagnose and safely repair basic faults.
  • Trainees will receive a course manual, remote support, 2 one-day tutorials.
  • The course consists of both theory and practical elements.
  • All trainees will receive a certificate of attendance after course completion.

Programme Objectives & Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, trainees will be able to:

  1. Describe how a PLC works.
  2. Describe the operation of PLC system components.
  3. Write a basic PLC program in ‘ladder logic’.
  4. Switch between ‘ladder logic’ and ‘instruction list’ (Boolean).
  5. Store, Upload and Download programs to a PLC.
  6. Understand how to diagnose and safely repair basic PLC faults.

Equipment needed

The course will be carried out using the ESS Training Manual (supplied to each trainee) and a PLC computer programme (OMRON, pre-installed onsite).

Trainees will need to bring a pen, notebook and Scientific Calculator to each day of the course.

Trainer Profile

Our trainer has worked in the Electrical Engineering industry for over 40 years, the last 20 which have been spent specifically constructing and instructing on PLC systems.

Currently he acts a consultant in Electrical and Controls Engineering and during the course of his career he has worked extensively in Ireland, the UK, the EU and the Middle East, qualifying plants and equipment upgrades/reconditioning.
