This workshop is a practical, hands-on training workshop on using a microscope to analyse activated sludge in wastewater treatment for public and private sectors in which personnel require a knowledge of grease traps.

Course Aim:

This workshop is a practical, hands-on training workshop on using a microscope to analyse activated sludge in wastewater treatment for public and private sectors in which personnel require a knowledge of grease traps.

Introduction:

Over the past ten few years, ESS Ltd has worked with clients and local authorities in managing wastewater Treatment plants. Microscopic examination of wastewater sludges is invaluable in determining the health of the treatment system and in evaluating treatment problems. For activated sludge, the abundance and identity of filaments is essential, as sludge bulking and foaming are common operational problems. The microscopic examination identifies the filament(s) and other indicator organisms present and this information is then used to give the suggested causes for the filaments and suggestions for their control.

The microscope provides the wastewater treatment plant operator with the special tools for process control and troubleshooting of the activated sludge process. The operator can “read” the organisms and use them as “bio-indicators” to determine if operational conditions are acceptable or not acceptable.

Written for plant operators and technicians and avoiding unnecessary technical jargon, the course will examine the use of a microscope to examine the activated sludge process and explains:

  • Microscopy, including microscopic measurements and techniques
  • Directions for preparing and applying microbiological stains, etc.
  • How to identify various types of organisms
  • The collection, evaluation, and presentation of observations

Course Content:

The training will give participants the necessary figures, tables, worksheets, photomicrographs drawings of many living, microscopic components of the activated sludge process needed to complete their work. The course will equip plant operators, technicians and others to monitor, regulate, and troubleshoot the treatment processes and also serves as a valuable resource for research professionals and sanitary engineers in wastewater treatment.
